This ‘new’ nutrition management article relates to feed physical quality and describes its impact on bird performance and how feed physical quality should be monitored both in the mill and on the farm.
Feed physical quality is often seen as an issue in the field, recent evaluations have shown that the impact on performance is significantly more than previously determined. Optimising feed physical quality not only supports farm performance but also improves processing yield.
Feed physical quality also has an impact on enteric condition, birds fed poorer feed physical quality had poorer enteric condition relative to birds fed good quality crumbs and intact pellet.
Continuous monitoring of feed physical quality is important on the farm as much as in the feed mill to ensure that feed form is meeting standards at a bird level.
If feed physical quality is below standard there are several approaches to improving feed physical quality within the mill some of which do not involve significant investment.
